I must admit that I was feeling slightly deflated after the game yesterday. Such a sense of optimism around Elland Road prior to kick-off, but the game failed to reach the level of which we are starting to feel accustomed to. Indeed, the team put in the effort and the body language of the players as they walked off the pitch clearly showed they were as disappointed as the fans.
What if McCormack would've had that chance that Smith blew from 8 yards out? Would the game of been a different story? Probably, but what's done is done, or what isn't done is more the point. We've missed our opportunities in games and yesterday was a classic example of what it costs when that final whistle is blown.
I am by no means criticising our team. They put the effort in and that's the main thing, but we can play a lot better than that. The aim of this article is to continue to promote the positivity and confidence that I myself have in our team. However, we all know that we are in need of new acquisitions and the January transfer market is a very welcomed time for us.
Following an interview with Brian McDermott, he claimed that Max Gradel could be a possible target. However, I do not believe that Mad Max is on the immediate list of players on the managers radar. I do believe that we are in desperate need of talented midfielders, players who can not only create something, but can also score goals.
We are becoming too dependent on Ross McCormack and this was apparent during the game yesterday. There is not enough threat from elsewhere on the pitch in my opinion and this is something I feel hopeful will change during January. I am sure the team we have seen already this season is only the core of what the Leeds United of the future will look like.
With a few new additions in those key areas, we will be a very strong team indeed. We are no longer playing with fear, but we are still playing with a lack of ideas during key phases in the game. I am confident that this will be resolved and I have the up most faith in Brain McDermott to bring in the players that will make Leeds United not only a difficult team to beat at home, but wherever they go. Making Elland Road a fortress is all well and good, but it takes more than a stadium to make a team.
All that being said, I know the Championship is a tough league with the chance of anybody beating anybody, but I really do believe that we are going to see something special over the next few months. We have a great chance for promotion this season and I sense Brian McDermott and the team are also aware of this opportunity. Adding the players we need will surely help us achieve this goal.
Whether we obtain the services of these individuals is a different matter entirely... I am confident the owners will back the manager and regardless of whatever happens, we are already playing like a stronger unit, a togetherness and a desire to finish teams off. We just need that missing piece to the puzzle and we will be more than capable of beating any team is this league.
Everything has been put in place. We have the owners, we have the manager, we have the fans and we have the confidence. We just need a little more ability to put the icing on the cake Oh, and a referee that doesn't stop us from playing, by giving silly free kicks against us..
MOT and a Merry Christmas to you all.
