So, the 2012/2013 season closes. It closes on a win, but the season has been one to forget really.
Leeds United finish in a below-par 13th place. At no point did we ever look like having a realistic chance of getting into the play-offs and towards the end we looked as if we could be heading in the wrong direction entirely.
Our overall record for the season stood at 17 wins, 10 draws and 19 losses. No team looking for promotion should lose more than they win. 57 scored and 66 conceded. This needs to be addressed.
Our home record was okay, I'd like to see a slight improvement next season though, just so we have a chance to compete. The home record ended with 13 wins, 3 draws and 7 losses. We scored 30 at home and conceded 26.
Our away form was our achilles heal though, we accumulated 4 wins, 7 draws and 12 losses. We scored 27 and conceded a whopping 40 goals. So, what do I want to see next season?
I'll admit I'm a part-timer. I have other priorities which always trumped watching Neil Warnock's Leeds play 'hoofball' for £30. Despite being a part-timer I've noticed that Elland Road isn't the same place as it used to be. I think this has happened for two reasons. One, the north/south divide has played a part for sure and secondly, the non-existent promotion push has left people lethargic and frankly quite bored. I vow to go to more games next season, I won't have my other priorities in the way next season so I'm really looking forward to that.
I want people to stop mentioning Bates, Harvey and all the tosh that goes on behind the scenes. It's getting old and it seems to be some fans tool for blame, ''Bates' fault'' they all cry. I don't understand why people can't just move on, yes he has screwed us over for the past few seasons but just get on with it, now he is in the past I don't see why people are still making a fuss. It brings a downer over the club which reflects in the fans attitude, which is turn could transfer to the players.
I like the idea of Brian McDermott bringing in his own specialist coaches, analysts and sports science staff from Reading. I don't think the ways of Neil Warnock were getting the most out of the players. I think meticulous research done behind the scenes at Thorp Arch throughout the summer will really help for a great promotion push next season.
Although we have already started playing with the ball on the ground I just wanted to say I hope it stays the same. I like the new methods that McDermott has come up with and I like the way he has got the best out of some players, McCormack and Varney up-top especially.
And finally, I'd like to see some new faces. A new centre-back would be nice, maybe a versatile full-back who can play at both sides would be nice too. We need a bigger squad, there is no doubting that. I would really like to see maybe as many as two new central midfielders coming in. Just people who will boss it better than Green, Brown, Austin and Norris are now. I haven't been too keen on Austin this season, I hope McDermott can utilise him well next season, he just seems a bit of a battering-ram to me. I think the attack is well catered for, that's not to say if we did get a top-quality attacker I'd question it, I just think we need to strengthen other places first.
Please leave comments on what you'd like to see next season.
