152 games, 85 goals and forever a part of Leeds United history. Everyone at the club wishes former striker Jermaine Beckford a very happy retirement.
Beckford say’s goodbye
Leeds United captain Liam Cooper has been named in @ScotlandNT’s squad for their Euro 2020 qualifiers against Russia and Belgium next month.
Rich reward for some stand out displays from the skipper.
Team News: Eight changes for Leeds; Douglas, Davis, Shackleton, McCalmont(debut), Clarke, Bogusz(debut), Costa and Nketiah come into the starting eleven. Nine changes for Stoke City.
Team: Casilla, Douglas, Berardi, Davis, Shackleton, Phillips, McCalmont, Clarke, Bogusz, Costa, Nketiah
Leeds United 2 - 2 Stoke City(Stoke win 5-4 on penalties)
Three substitute appearances, three goals for Eddie🔥Nketiah.
Marcelo Bielsa: “For us it was very important to stay in this competition, being eliminated creates a disappointing feeling in us. In the second half the team played better, I cannot say we improved the team by the changes.
“The team played better in the second half than the first. We cannot say the first half was a bad (performance), it didn't create a disappointing feeling. The difference was the collective of the team, not individuals."
Nathan Jones: “I’m proud of them tonight, I thought first half we were really excellent, structured and we had a real threat, especially on the counter.
We could have done a bit better with some opportunities with a bit more cutting edge and belief, especially with young Tyrese (Campbell) we could have extended that lead before half-time. Second half I think a few of them ran out of steam because there’s a lot there that haven’t played.
Bury expelled by English Football League after takeover collapses
Bolton have 14 days to find a buyer for the club or they will also be expelled from the EFL.
Five years ago David Hockaday was sacked as Leeds Head Coach. Makes you think that things have gone a long way in those five years.
Really good article on the demise of Bury FC and what it could mean to other team’s in the same predicament. Heartbreaking.
Thanks to David Conn of The Guardian.
David Watkins on rough justice for the team last night, Shackleton and Davis in defence will learn a lot but what’s up with Jack Clarke?
Disappointed but not dismayed.
Thank you David.
Bolton Wanderers saved!
Fantastic news after yesterday’s sadness of Bury being expelled.
Stuart Dallas named in Northern Ireland's squad for their Euro 2020 qualifiers against Luxembourg and Germany.
Division One Sunderland beat Burnley 3-1 at Turf Moor in the second round of the Carabao Cup. Swansea warm up for the game with Leeds with a 6-0 hammering of Cambridge United.
Angus Kinnear vowed to oust any fan caught racially abusing a player at Elland Road and they will be banned for LIFE. MD Kinnear spoke after a so-called fan was arrested on Tuesday night and has has been banned from attending games at the club. Kinnear said this today: “We are bitterly disappointed by the reports of racist behaviour this week and supporters can rest assured that they are being investigated thoroughly, all acts of racism will be met with the strongest possible penalties and evidence will be handed to the authorities. We will continue to work with the EFL, FA, Kick it Out and our fan base to ensure everyone feels included at Elland Road."
Well said Angus, no place for this at our club!
What Marcelo and Eddie had to say ... pre Swansea City.
Thanks to the YEP
Leeds United today announced the arrival of Josh Galloway from Sky Bet League Two side Carlisle United. The 17-year-old midfielder has agreed scholarship terms with the club and links up with the Whites immediately.
Last time we met
Leeds 2-1 Swansea 13/2/2019
Swansea have changed their squad significantly from last season, Dan James and Olly McBurnie sold on to get much needed revenue into the club. They have been praised by many for their free flowing football and despite the young age of their defence they have conceded only seven goals in five Championship fixtures. They are only behind Leeds courtesy of Leeds’ better goal difference(1).
Leeds changed eight outfield starters on Tuesday giving Jack Clarke, Hélder Costa and Eddie Nketiah match minutes both Costa and Nketiah scored to give the Head Coach plenty to think about before he names his starting eleven, Nketiah now has three goals in three substitute appearances and it can’t be long before he finds a way into the starting eleven. It may be harder for Costa as both wide positions have players(Hernandez and Harrison)who have started the season so impressive.
It will be close to another sell out crowd at Elland Road to see the top two battle it out for first place before the international break stops domestic football for two weeks. The biggest game of the season and either side might be happy with a point. Leeds 2-1.
Leeds v Swansea City
Team News: One change for Leeds; Liam Cooper returns in place of Gaetano Berardi. Swansea unchanged from their 3-0 over Birmingham City.
Team: Casilla, Dallas, White, Cooper(c), Alioski, Phillips, Forshaw, Klich, Hernandez, Harrison, Bamford.
My review from the press box.
Man of the Match: Stuart Dallas, never stopped running and gave all he had.
Marcelo Bielsa: "The individual performance of the players was positive. Our players played a little under the level that they have, we had the ball constantly and we defended well.
“Having the ball 70 per cent of the ball, with very balanced refereeing decisions, with an opponent that tried to play, and the team created
12 or more chances in front of goal, something we need to criticise but I don't know what to say to criticise. The individual performances of the players were positive, talking about each player,
“The chances the opponents had were in relation to corners, but not directly the corners the second balls after the corners We had high a possession of the ball, we attacked with enough calm and created enough chances to deserve two or three goals, this is the analysis of the game. Honestly we can't criticise."
Steve Cooper: "It is the perfect result, a clean sheet away from home and scoring one. It is a good return. I'm not going to be too reserved, but there are 40 games left. I feel like we have played 30 already! Of course, it is a good start, encouraging. A good tally so far, no doubt about that.
“But we need to keep going, keep working and get ready for the next game. Six games… it is too early for any mention. I'm not looking at it (the table), honestly. We are pleased with how we are doing, pleased with the progression of the team. We are growing."
David Watkins reflects on the first defeat of the season and wonders when Helder and Eddie will get their chance in the starting eleven. Surely it can’t be long, or will Bielsa stick with his tried and tested X1.
Thank you David.
Disappointed but not dismayed was the general feeling on social media, most agreed that enough chances were there to win the game but in this league you fail to stick it in the ‘onion bag’ you could and in Leeds’ case suffer the consequences, it also helps if you concentrate right up to the final whistle and if a ball bounces around in your penalty area kick the bloody ball into the stands if you can!
Stand out players mentioned were Kalvin Phillips, Ben White and Stuart Dallas who was most people’s MOTM. Questions were though asked on when Costa and Nketiah will get their chance as starters and who drops out.
Away at Barnsley next and it would not surprise many if Bielsa continues with the same starting X1 and use the high profile signings as ‘impact’ substitutes. Bielsa has his way and he’ll play who he thinks is best suited to the way the team is set out.
Laurens De Bock joins Sunderland on a season-long loan, Pawel Cibicki joins ADO Den Haag on loan and Vurnon Anita has his contract terminated.
Heidi Haigh on a stressful morning, getting recognised and her superb blog of the game with Swansea City
Thank you Heidi
So the dust is about to settle on the first six Championship games and two Carabao Cup ties. All in all it’s been a much better start to the 2019/20 season than I thought it would be, third in the league(should have been top mind you). Players who I thought were squad players upping their anti to be first on the team sheet and the feel-good is still around Elland Road, it’s a better place to visit than it was two season’s ago.
Three really good displays at Bristol City, Salford and Stoke where we scored three goals and only Nottingham Forest and Swansea that disappointed because we could and should have won both games.
Stand out players
Eddie Nketiah(three goals in four substitute appearances plus two starts in the cup)
Others have done well in individual games including Helder Costa, Pablo Hernandez, Kiko Casilla and Mateusz Klich.
All things said I’m pretty happy and I hope the good start can be continued in the games with Barnsley(A), Derby(H), Charlton(A) and West Brom(H). Four tough games that will follow the international break.
Bring it on!
