The ‘small dogs’ have appointed Jan Siewert as their head coach, the German joins from Borussia Dortmund. He was their under 23’s coach.
Gaetano Berardi makes his first appearance since the game against Ipswich Town in October, Kiko Casilla starts his first Leeds game, Tyler Roberts is a late replacement in the starting eleven for ‘Izzy’ Brown who moved to the bench in the under 23’s game with Southampton in the Premier League Cup at Tadcaster Albion’s ground.
Leeds win the game 3-2, the goals coming from Halme, Diaz and Edmundson. Brown came on as a second half substitute, Berardi limped off(muscle strain)in the first half and was replaced by Shackleton.
Leeds United's Gaetano Berardi set for scans today as hamstring niggle leaves him doubtful for Rotherham trip. Hopefully it won’t be serious and his return to the first team won’t be delayed too long.
Tickets for the away game at Middlesbrough sell out in under ten minutes. Remarkable!
Cardiff City’s fifteen million new striker Emiliano Sala is feared to have died in a plane crash, the 28 year old striker had only signed for the Welsh club on Saturday and had returned to France to say his goodbye’s to his ex teammates at FC Nantes. He had set off back from France on Monday night but air traffic control lost contact with the plane off Alderney in the Channel Islands.
On Tuesday evening the search for the plane was suspended. A spokesman said “We have found no trace of those on board. If they did land on the water, the chances of survival are unfortunately very slim due to the adverse weather.” The search will continue on Wednesday.
The letter sent the EFL. Naming the eleven Championship teams that have questions about #spygate.
Leeds are rumoured to be about to make a bid for Swansea City’s twenty one year old winger Daniel James. The fee would be well in excess of three million pounds, the winger has eighteen months left of his contract at Swansea.
The search for Argentina striker Emiliano Sala was called off yesterday. It will now become a “recovery” not a rescue when it restarts on Thursday morning.
Manchester City go through 10-0 on aggregate after beating Burton Albion 1-0 in the second leg of Carabao Cup semi final.
One year ago this beauty landed before our eyes ... NOT!!
The search for ex FC Nantes striker Emiliano Sala was officially called off at 15.15, the Harbourmaster David Barker has asked all vessels to be on the lookout for any wreckage of the plane. He said it was a “difficult decision to make” but there is little chance of the two people in the plane being found alive.
Marcelo Bielsa: Kiko Casilla will start his first team career at Rotherham United, BPF is expected to be on the bench. Kalvin Phillips will return at centre back alongside Liam Cooper. Both Barry Douglas and Stuart Dallas are training but need at least one under 23’s game to get them match fit. Bamford is nearly ready to start training(expected back mid February) but ‘Izzy’ Brown is still a few under 23 games away from being considered ready for the first team. Leeds team for Rotherham United will be: Casilla, Ayling, Phillips, Cooper(c), Alioski, Forshaw, Klich, Clarke, Hernandez, Harrison, Roofe.
Bielsa on BPF: “I think he (Peacock-Farrell) will play again as a starter in the future. We have to contribute to take advantage of the time when there are less demanding calls to allow him to correct what he needs to correct. He’s a very good asset for Leeds United.”
Bielsa on the game with Rotherham United: “We have to win all of our games, the last result doesn’t give us more of an obligation to win the next match. We played the worst game so far against Stoke City, just after playing our best game in the Championship.”
“It is very difficult for us to understand our last performance, we played against an opponent who made it easier for us to win the game. If we had a game where it is easy to do our best- to attack- it was the game against Stoke. Even when they played 11 v 10, the opponent was not an obstacle for us, we were our main obstacle. (On Saturday) there are two teams with different styles. Usually Rotherham play long balls, they try to get second balls, use long throw-ins and rely on set pieces.”
“We have a different style- it is not better or worse than their style. They will try to play using their style and we will try to play using ours. I think they know what they have to do to neutralise our game and we know what we have to be careful of to prevent the opponent from doing this.”
Chelski beat Spurs 2-1 in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi final levelling the scores on aggregate. They win the tie 4-2 on penalties to go through to Wembley where they will play Manchester City.

Leeds travel to the New York Stadium hoping to carry on their impressive statistic of scoring in every away game this season. With Sheffield United hosting Norwich City it is important that United get a win.
Marcelo Bielsa has already announced his team for the visit to Rotherham United. Kiko Casilla starts in goal and Kalvin Phillips returns to the starting eleven. The rest of the team is the one that started against Stoke City.
Rotherham have a decent record at the New York Stadium with most of their twenty five points gained there. The ‘Millers’ have a few doubts and will give the players with illness / injuries until the last minute before naming their starting eleven. Last week they were beaten 4-2 at home by Brentford.
The biggest problem in recent away games is that Leeds have gone behind in every game since Aston Villa, the last time they were ahead was at Bolton Wanderers when Patrick Bamford scored the only game of the game.
An early goal would settle a few away fans nerves and probably set Leeds up for a comfortable away win. Leeds 3-1.
Rotherham United v Leeds
Team News: Kiko Casilla makes his debut, Kalvin Phillips returns after suspension. Two changes for Rotherham.
Paying respects to Emiliano Sala.
Team: Casilla, Ayling, Phillips, Cooper(c), Alioski, Forshaw, Klich, Clarke, Hernandez, Harrison, Roofe.
Leeds pick up three points in a dogged performance at the New York stadium.
Thanks to Leedsunited.com
Klich scores the equaliser and celebrates.
Men of the Match: Mateusz Klich, two goals and an impressive 90 mins, Kiko Casilla, superb save at 1-1 and quality throughout.
Marcelo Bielsa: "Kiko Casilla did not have a lot of work to do with some mid-distance saves and he had some aerial work at the end of the game. From my point of view it was very difficult to avoid the goal we conceded and he had a balanced performance.”
“I don't have any certainty about the possibility of a new player (arriving as a transfer). If we can work on players who are better than our players, it would be a good thing but they have to be better than our players."
Paul Warne: "It is always difficult to concede that late on because it doesn't allow you to throw the kitchen sink at them. I am 100 per cent honest and I am proud of their performance. We limited them to very few chances.”
"I thought from the lads' attitude and sticking to the gameplan could have been enough to come away with a positive result."
Ex-Leeds Head Coach Steve Evans is sacked after the 0-0 draw with Charlton Athletic. Darren Ferguson takes charge of ‘Posh’ for the third time.

Two reviews of yesterday’s game with Rotherham United.
David Watkins: Not pretty but effective, Leeds fail to hit the heights but get an important three points.
Thank you David. Let us hope Pontus back and Kalvin in midfield gives us the edge against our closest rivals Norwich City next week at Elland Road.
Jack Fawcus reviews the game, giving the opposition view of proceedings at the New York Stadium. Jack kindly did the ‘interview’ pre game.
Yesterday showed why one team is top of the league and the other one is sadly in serious relegation trouble. Promotions are built on winning games away from home even when you don’t play well. Rotherham faced serious pressure from a Leeds team who dominated the possession stats and that pressure eventually forced two sloppy goals and took the three points home with them.
Rotherham lined up with centre-half Semi Ajayi taking up a holding midfielder berth again as he had at Elland Road in August and flooding the midfield certainly worked first half. With Richie Towell giving a typical all action midfield performance and Will Vaulks looking to pick up scraps, Rotherham held their own during a spirited first half. We know Ajayi doesn’t like playing midfield but he must have enjoyed scoring an amazing goal to take the lead. Some crisp midfield passing followed by a rising shot from outside the box which beat the debutant Leeds goalie. Despite being good value for their half time lead, manager Paul Warne must have been concerned by the space and time Luke Ayling was given as he spent most of his game in Rotherham’s final third
Throughout the first half Bielsa was noticeably agitated, leaving his bucket for conferences with his coaches and he acted at half time by withdrawing the promising Clarke and introducing Tyler Roberts. As the second half continued Leeds exerted increasing pressure and Rotherham struggled to get out of their half. That pressure told in the end as Rotherham conceded two poor goals, though who knows what the result may have been had the Leeds goalkeeper not made an outstanding save from typically vicious Will Vaulks strike at 1-1.
Three enforced changes knocked the stuffing out of Rotherham as sadly our bench doesn’t offer the strength on depth at the moment that it should. 5 minutes of frenzied injury time aerial bombardment couldn’t break down leeds’ resistance leading to contrasting emotions at full time as the travelling Leeds fans and the remaining home fans clapped the efforts of tired and beaten Millers players.
You showed you can win scrappy and that will give your promotion hopes a boost. Impressive display from the noisy away fans too in what seemed to be a day of good spirits.
We go again next week and hope to pick up a few valuable points in the weeks going forward.
Thanks Jack, excellent review.
The top 5 divisions in England are all topped by a team beginning with L.
Which ironically is almost the same as looking at Huddersfield Town’s current form 🤣
Thanks to Berardi’s Bananas (@bullockleeds) for the Tweet.
Leeds United have already eclipsed their points total for the whole 2014/15 season (56), matched 2013/14 (57) and are 3 away from matching last season's overall tally (60) after just 29 matches this season.

Heidi Haigh sadness at the passing of young Toby and a part of her family, the return of ‘thumbs up’ Phil Cresswell and her blog of the victory at Rotherham.
Thank you Heidi and my regards to your daughter for her loss. Pets are a big part of families.
Stuart Dallas faces another lengthy time out of the side due to an ankle injury sustained in training, the Northern Ireland international had just returned to training after being out injured previously with a broken foot. The popular midfielder is expected to be out until March
‘Izzy’ Brown, Barry Douglas and Tyler Roberts start for the under 23’s against Sheffield United. Douglas game through forty five minutes and Brown got the only goal in the 1-0 win, it was United’s third win in a row.
A much needed win at Rotherham United has set up the game with Norwich City superbly, three points separate the teams and with the East Anglian team being one of the teams that complained about #spygate is expected that the game will be ‘fiercely’
contested. A win for Leeds would see a sizeable gap open up between first and second.
It is has to be seen if any additions are brought into the club before the transfer window closes on Thursday. It is hoped the rumours of a large bid from Spurs for Jack Clarke does not materialise because he is definitely one that needs to be kept at Elland Road.
The last time Marcelo Bielsa had a full squad to pick from was in pre season when Leeds played Southend and Oxford United. The very fact that they are top of the Championship with this in mind is absolutely incredible and all credit to an amazing Head Coach.
Full list of players and how many games they have missed so far.
‘Izzy’ Brown (yet to play for the first team)
Rumours continue to circulate that Leeds are negotiating with Swansea City for the services of winger Daniel James. He later played in Swansea’s 3-3 draw with Birmingham City and scored the opening goal.
Looking smart. Leeds legend Eddie Gray and Leeds current first teamer Jack Clarke model the new ‘Legacy Range’ that the club have launched today.
Following the success of recent Rugby League fixtures at Elland Road, Leeds United FC are excited to have been announced as one of two venues to host a Rugby League semi final clash.
Leeds United are pleased to announce the signing of Mateusz Bogusz from Ruch Chorzow, subject to international clearance.
The 17-year-old has signed a two-and-a-half year deal at Elland Road, running until the summer of 2021.
Bogusz, who has won international caps at youth level for Poland and becomes the club’s second signing of the January transfer window, following the arrival of Kiko Casilla from Real Madrid.
The midfielder will initially link up with Carlos Corberan’s Under-23 side.
Phil Hay of the YEP has said that Leeds will pursue their ‘top target’ Daniel James right up to the end of the transfer window. The clubs are still talking but the sticking point is the fee and what add ons are needed for Swansea to agree to the deal. The Welsh club are very keen to move on their highest earners after a disappointing season.
Hadi Sacko joins MKE Ankaragucu until the end of the season. It is the winger’s second loan move this season and is expected to leave Elland Road in the summer.
Rise up. Incredible video.
Nantes’ first home match since the disappearance of striker Emiliano Sala was stopped in ninth minute for round of applause for their still missing ex striker.
(Transfer Deadline Day)
Marcelo Bielsa gives team news, injury updates and names the team to face Norwich City: Pablo Hernandez is fit to face Norwich City, Pontus Jansson will replace Kalvin Phillips in defence. Adam Forshaw keeps his place in midfield, Kalvin Phillips drops to the bench. Tyler Roberts comes in for Jack Clarke who also drops to the bench. The team to face Norwich is: Casillia, Ayling, Jansson, Cooper(c), Alioski, Forshaw, Klich, Harrison, Roberts, Hernandez, Roofe.
Injuries: Barry Douglas is back in the eighteen but ‘Izzy’ Brown isn’t match fit enough to be considered for the first team. Gaetano Berardi, Patrick Bamford and Stuart Dallas are “short of fitness”. Stuart Dallas has an injury of which Bielsa said “He has a problem in his foot. It’s a new problem, linked to bone stress. He will need complete rest for 10 days and then we will see how long he will be out for.”
Bielsa on Norwich and their impressive striker Puki: “Norwich is a team that attacks very well and is designed to attack, it doesn’t mean that they don’t defend well, but the profile of the team is a creative one. We want to attack, but we know we will have to defend a lot too, it is an opponent we have to respect. If you have a difference of six points and the team plays with regularity, it is a big difference.”
“If the team doesn’t and has ups and downs, it is not as significant. I think apart from the position that both teams occupy, the offensive aspect is for both teams is attractive to supporters.”
Teemu Pukki: “Pukki’s skills are not common in English football. He’s a player who is hard to neutralise, he is always in good positions to receive the ball and makes many movements. He plays very simple, but he is very efficient.”
Phil Hay on why the loan deal for Daniel James was blocked at the eleventh hour.
In a time where the ‘spirit of the game’ is widely mentioned when complaints about LUFC are made, isn’t the same to be said about agreeing a deal then ignoring the buying club the same thing? I sincerely hope when Swansea offer Daniel James a new contract he tells them to stick it up their a#%e!!
Tom Pearce joins Scunthorpe United and Sam Dalby joins Morecambe on loan until the end of the season.
James’ agent lays the blame at Swansea’s door for the James debacle.
David Menasseh: “Swansea made no attempt to keep the player and at the first sign of money they couldn’t show him the door quickly enough. It is very disappointing, but the player (James)is philosophical and disappointed about it. I don’t want to say anymore than that.”

Leeds v Norwich: Key battles.
Leeds face their nearest rivals in a massive ‘six pointer’ at a sold out Elland Road on Saturday tea time. The Championship leaders hold a three point lead over their East Anglian opponents.
Marcelo Bielsa will be disappointed that Daniel James was not added to his squad but he will hope that the squad that has done well so far this season can go on and finish the job.
Bielsa has already announced his team to face the ‘Canaries’. Pontus Jansson returns to centre of the defence in place of Kalvin Phillips who surprisingly drops to the bench along with Jack Clarke and fit again Barry Douglas. Adam Forshaw keeps his place as holding midfielder whilst Tyler Roberts gets his first start since October in the ‘number 10’ role. Pablo Hernandez moving to the right hand side of midfield.
Daniel Farke has a impressive squad with Puki the obvious danger man, he also has some very good youngsters that have blossomed this season. Earlier in the season Leeds beat Norwich 3-0 at Carrow Road with goals from Klich, Alioski and Hernandez.
This should be a ‘cracker’ of a game with both teams having plenty to offer in attack, Leeds know a win will give them a six point cushion over their biggest contenders for the title.
I’m hopeful that they will put down a significant marker and win a close game. Leeds 2-1.
Farke on Bielsa: "I'm full of respect for Marcelo Bielsa. He's doing a fantastic job. Every manager has their own methods but I'm just concentrated on my team, our style and our topics.”
"We know everything about Leeds. We've analysed them, what style they play. Perhaps there are one or two questions marks, even after Bielsa naming the team two days ago”
Leeds v Norwich City
Team News: Two changes for Leeds; Pontus Jansson return to the defence, Tyler Roberts replaces Jack Clarke who drops to the bench alongside Kalvin Phillips, fit again Barry Douglas and Patrick Bamford.
Team: Casilla, Ayling, Jansson, Cooper(c), Alioski, Forshaw, Klich, Hernandez, Roberts, Harrison, Roofe.
From the press box
Remembering two young fans gone way too soon.
Marcelo Bielsa: "In the first half, for all the positive moments we had, we couldn't take advantage. We made mistakes in front of our box, so we helped the opponent to create chances and after the opponents scored, it was hard for us to recover the ball.”
"This is an indication that the team is not doing very well right now."
Daniel Farke: "That's a well-deserved win because it was a close game and Leeds were highly motivated to be successful after their last win. I think they started pretty well, but I think it was totally deserved to go and lead at half-time.”
"My feeling was, in the first half, our possession was not at its best and we had some problems with our pressing. We spoke about this at half-time and I was pleased with the second half. Leeds wanted to put us under pressure, but we didn't give them a chance."
Huw Jenkins resigns as Swansea Chairman, shame he didn’t do it before Thursday!! Jenkins is rumoured to be the one that put ‘the spanner in the works’ that stopped Daniel James joining Leeds on Deadline Day. He signed off this this: “The current atmosphere within the football club on and off the football field saddens me very much and I find it very difficult to fight on in a football club I love but can no longer control"
Two views of yesterday’s game at Elland Road.
David Watkins on how failures at both ends is affecting our recent results and could Patrick Bamford be the man to fix one of them.
Thank you David.
A fed up DW.
Ewan Downes on Norwich’s win at Elland Road that took the ‘Canaries’ top of the Championship on goal difference.
In my years of watching the Canaries, I have seen very few performances that meet the standards of those met at Elland Road. That was probably our best performance since our day out at Wembley Stadium against Middlesbrough in 2015.
We were outstanding from front to back. The free kick from Mario Vrancic was excellent and I don’t believe that the deflection had much influence on the strike. Kiko Casilla was always going to be in trouble with it. Pukki, as always, was in the right place at the right time as he scores yet another goal. A fantastic free signing. Vrancic’s second goal was well taken and it epitomised our control in the second half.
Closing down Leeds in the right areas, meant that we stopped any threat that they possessed. Our defensive vulnerabilities worried me but they were excellent majorly. Our defensive discipline was refreshing to see! Going forwards, all the players were on point as usual. We were clinical when the chances arose.
A classy performance, Vrancic was deservedly MOTM. Not just his goals but his overall play was excellent. He has taken his chance when Mo Leitner became unavailable through injury. Mario has been great since coming into the side. I mentioned how Buendia was crucial to us, and he proved how good he was. Frustration followed for Leeds, and it was understandable.
The referee wasn’t great, but I didn’t see the potential Krul red card incident during the game? I can’t comment on that. But Leeds were off the boil today and I think part of that could be due to how good the Canaries played.
Disappointing to concede late on, set pieces are a concern. We looked a mess but Patrick Bamford finished well. A good player who has been unlucky with injuries since joining Leeds. also the antics of Tim Krul were stupid after the game with Bamford.
But those things do not change my view on the game. Norwich were brilliant, Leeds were not. Leeds have a lot of quality in their side and will definitely be up there for promotion but tonight was about the team in yellow.
It is really impressive to see such positive performances with key players out with injury. Timm Klose and Mo Leitner are two fabulous footballers who are injured currently. And the incomings, Ben Godfrey for example. A young man who’s most familiar with the defensive midfield position, has fitted in effortlessly at centre half.
I wasn’t very impressed with Leeds, but they outclassed us at Carrow Road and they’ve been the top dogs all season. They are a good side and I still predict promotion for them. And although we’ve played well recently, the results haven’t matched. Many draws (against difficult opposition) have halted our promotion charge momentarily.
This win at Elland Road could be the catalyst for a strong end to the season. Bring it on. OTBC.
Heidi Haigh on James and Jenkins, a packed Peacock(I so know because I couldn’t find Heidi to buy her latest book), flowers for Toby Nye at Billy’s statue. All this and much more in her blog of the game with Norwich City.
Thank you Heidi and I hope next time I’m more successful in finding you so I can buy your book.
Not a good time in Leedsville, four defeats in six is relegation form not promotion form. Of the four teams who have got three points off us only, now top Norwich City are in the top six the others maybe just outside the playoff places but you’d expect better.
The key is sorting out a defence that has once again shown it's soft ‘under belly’ that so cost us last season and the attack that was potent earlier in the season now seems to need twice or three as many chances to get a goal. I’m not placing the blame at Kemar Roofe, it can’t help his cause when high balls sail past his head and are headed clear by much taller defenders. David Watkins hopes the return of Patrick Bamford will boost the goals output and so do I.
This team hasn’t become a bad one overnight but if Leeds are serious about their ambitions the defence, midfield and strikers need to up their game and do it quick. A few player’s (not naming and blaming) have performed poorly and the majority of fans know who they are. It’s time for those individuals to ups their anti!!
On to Middlesbrough. I’m away so my son shall take you through the next week or so while I soak up a little winter sun. 😎
A beautiful send off for a wonderful mum and a loving grandmother. Forever in our hearts. RIP Mum xx
Bielsa continues his strong defence of the players in the Boro preview and also hits at the current injuries for the club.
The likes of Forshaw and Klich could be set to miss the game, with Hernandez also carrying a knock.
The lineup is said to be something along these lines;
Casilla, Ayling, Jansson, Cooper, Alioski, Phillips, Shackleton, Hernandez, Harrison, Roofe, Bamford
Although this may seem like Bielsa is hoping for Roofe to return to his winger roots, don’t be too surprised to see both Roofe and Bamford to line up in a two man attack in a 3-3-1-3 formation.
Jim White comments on the Football League’s Directors Meeting that is taking place today and tomorrow as Leeds set to see an end to #spygate
Usually a big supporter of Leeds, White has taken a lot of flack for his continued request for Leeds to be docked points, something his peers on several occasions have corrected him on.
Patrick Bamford talks up Leeds’ chances at Boro as he looks set to line up against his old club.
