Today in 1972 something magical happened.
Leeds 5 manu 1.
Will Leeds miss their top scorer?Phil Hay of the YEP looks at life without a Roofe(hopefully short term)and what Bielsa could do.
Thanks to the YEP.
Probable new club crest for the Centenary season. The badge is on the literature that comes with season ticket renewal packs.
WBA beat QPR 3-2 with an injury time goal from Jake Livermore. The win takes Albion one point away from Leeds who have a game in hand on the midlanders.
Tight at the top
A little surprising that in both last 16 games of the Champions League games featuring Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Lyon and Barcelona not a goal was seen.
YEP’s Phil Hay’s top four Leeds games thus far.
Derby County 1 Leeds 4
Norwich City 0 Leeds 3
Leeds 2 Derby County 0
Leeds 3 Stoke City 1
Can’t argue with any of the games picked but away at Villa and home to Blackburn Rovers on Boxing Day were pretty special too.
Luke Murphy on his time at Leeds and returns with no malice towards the club: “I was buzzing (after signing for United) as Leeds is a massive club,” he told the Bolton News. “I knew it prior to joining but it was only once I went there and spent time at the place that I realised just how big they were. It took me by surprise at first as I reckon you could go anywhere in the world and there would be Leeds fans. I was really happy to sign and have nothing but respect for them.”
“The season prior to leaving I went out on loan twice and with one year left on my contract they were looking in other directions and looking to bring in people from abroad. We ended on good terms and it was fine as I had the chance to come to another big club in Bolton.”
Will Huffer will return to Leeds after Leeds under 23 keeper Kamil Miazek sustained a finger injury in the warm up in the Bolton Wanderers game. Huffer had been on loan at Barnet for the last month making three appearances.
Leeds United confirmed that the badge I showed yesterday will indeed be the one used in the Centenary season. A spokesperson for United said: “The slightly modified crest will feature on the club’s 2019-20 kits and training range as well as a wide variety of exclusive centenary-led products and services.”
“The amendment has been made in order to add the words ‘Leeds United 100 years’ wording to the club badge.”
At least it’s better than this!
Two great games to remember on this date: In 1987; the 2-1 FA Cup 5th Round win over QPR. The winner scored by Brendan Ormsby at the Kop end and in 2001 Anderlecht 1 Leeds 4 in the Champions League. If I remember it was the first time the Belgium side had lost at home in the competition for a number of years.
Kemar Roofe speaking on Chris Moyles Radio X programme broadcast from Elland Road that he will be out for six to eight weeks but still expects to be fit for the “final six or seven games, maybe sooner.”
Marcelo Bielsa on the injury situation and the game with Bolton Wanderers: Injuries; Kemar Roofe out for six to eight weeks, Stuart Dallas ready to be considered for the weekend, Gaetano Berardi needs more under 23 games, Barry Douglas and Adam Forshaw still out, ‘Izzy’ Brown could be included in the eighteen for Saturday as he is making “positive steps”. No date given for the return of Jack Clarke, Tyler Roberts will replace the injured Kemar Roofe in the starting eleven.
On Bolton: “In these games it can be difficult to see the differences in the table ranking, if we have a look at the table, you would think Birmingham couldn’t lose against Bolton and yet Bolton won. You have opposite examples as well, but the norm in the Championship is that you won’t have any team that will beat an opponent easily.”
“In any case it is important for us to get points. The final games we have to play are very important, each of them. We don’t feel any obligation to get points because the rivals have positive results and we don’t feel that we don’t have the duty to win when the direct rivals don’t win their games.”
“All the points at stake will have a significant importance. I think there is an expectancy due to the fact Norwich City won 4-0 against Bolton Wanderers. We are focused on winning, that is our first goal, we are then focused on deserving to win and we will try to get the most important difference possible.”
Pontus Jansson became a cheer leader as he attended the Chelsea v Malmo game at Stamford Bridge. Unfortunately for the Leeds centre half the Swedish side lost 3-0 and went out of the Europa League 5-1 on aggregate.
Why Bielsa is so special: On signing autographs and having his picture taken with fans: "I do it because in football the most important element is the people who love the shirt, the club. They're not asking for a photo with me, but for one with the head coach of Leeds. I will never say no."
Chelsea are banned from signing any players for two transfer windows after being found guilty of breaching rules on signing minors, they were also fined £460,300. The FA were also fined £391,130. Chelsea and the FA will appeal the decision.
Phil Parkinson on the game with Leeds: “We have to go to Elland Road and believe we can get a result, of course, we have to look at what we can do better from the Norwich game, after which we know there is a better run coming up.”
“It will have to be perfect. You can’t sell yourself against players of that quality, you can’t switch off for a second and get done on a run because you will get punished. That is what happened against Norwich.”

With Leeds now in third place in the Championship for the first time this year and they know that Saturday’s game with Bolton Wanderers is a excellent opportunity to put pressure on Norwich and Sheffield Utd.
Leeds have to hope that now fit again Patrick Bamford can get the goals now that Kemar Roofe is out injured, he will hopefully be assisted by Tyler Roberts who gets the ‘number 10’ role. ‘Izzy’ Brown and fit again Stuart Dallas will be amongst the substitutes.
The home side have suffered from not putting away the chances they have created and this is one game they really need to put at least three goals past their visitors, they’ve done it twice at Elland Road this season, a 3-2 victory over Blackburn Rovers and a 3-0 against Preston North End.
Another full house is guaranteed and they will hope Leeds do their part and hope that other results go their way, if they do Leeds could well be top once again. Leeds 3-1.
Bolton; our complete home record reads: P32, W17 D8 L7. We are looking for our fifth straight home win against the Trotters at Elland Road and our 7th both home and away. We’re unbeaten in the last 9 in all competitions against them.

Leeds v Bolton Wanderers
Team News: Tyler Roberts replaces the injured Kemar Roofe. Stuart Dallas and ‘Izzy’Brown amongst the substitutes. Bolton make two changes.
Team: Casilla, Ayling, Jansson, Cooper(c), Alioski, Phillips, Klich, Hernandez, Roberts, Harrison, Bamford.
My thoughts on the 2-1 victory over Bolton.
Marcelo Bielsa: "It's a game very similar to other games we've played so far: we missed chances to score and suffered from set-pieces. Bolton were a team who fought a lot and had many chances to score.”
"The dangerous actions created by the opponent were from set-pieces especially. This has happened many times before in the Championship. As we won today we are in good condition to play the next game."
Phil Parkinson: "I'm just going to see the ref in a minute because there was a melee on the side of the pitch - one of their players has poured a drinks bottle over one of our player's head. Both sets of staff have gone to separate it because they didn't want it to escalate into anything. I did have a go at Pontus Jansson saying I felt he'd instigated it by running over.”
"There were about 15 people in amongst it being calm and he's decided to pick me out and give me a red card. So I'll ask him what his reasons for that are."
David Watkins on lots of possession yet again but doubts continue to bother the acclaimed Leeds United author.
Thank you David. Important two games coming up this week.
Social Media on the whole agreed with me on who performed the best, Alioski, Hernandez, Cooper, Casilla and Jansson at the back all getting mentioned. I’d like to also give a ‘gong’ to Remi Matthews in the Bolton goal who denied both Bamford and Harrison certain goals. On the negative side, frustration at Leeds’ inability to add to their goal difference was also got a few lines of comment.
Gzjgan Alioski has played in every single competitive match for Leeds under Marcelo Bielsa (2,949 minutes in total - more than any other player for the club).
He has also been directly involved in 20% of Leeds' goals in the Championship this season (6 goals, 5 assists).

Cittee beat Chelski 4-3 on penalties to lift the first silverware of the season. The Carabao Cup Final had ended 0-0 AET. In a amazing incident during extra time Chelsea’s keeper Arrizabalaga refused to be substituted by his manager who nearly walked out of the stadium as a result of the refusal.
Has to be seen to be believed. Disrespect at the highest level.
Heidi Haigh on Jack Clarke thankfully back in training, #spygate and one rule for us and another for every other team and her blog of a much needed, if mercy win over Bolton.
Thank you Heidi.
Marcelo Bielsa Pre QPR: He names an unchanged team for the trip to Loftus Road. Gaetano Berardi and Barry Douglas will be amongst the eighteen.
On QPR: “It’s not going to be an easy game on Tuesday because Queens Park Rangers have a very experienced team and it will be a very demanding game. We have to analyse each game of the opponent to find out that there is a very small difference between a win and a loss.”
“They can have a positive reaction or they can stay on the same negative cycle, but we will try to influence the events to get the best things for us. QPR have a very clear style, it's a team that knows how to play with their style and they know how to impose their skills.”
On the remaining games: “I think that from now on, all the games will be very important.
They will have very heavy consequences - including the one(QPR)on Tuesday night."
On Norwich City and Sheffield Utd: “What they developed so far, the way they have played so far and what they’ve shown so far makes them deserve the place they occupying now in the Championship."
Leeds United under 23’s beat Newcastle United under 23’s 3-1 in the Premier League Cup and qualified for the next round. Ryan Edmundson(2) and Pascal Struijk with the goals.
Steve McLaren on the game with Leeds: “This is a tough week, Leeds on Tuesday, a great atmosphere, another top team and we have to keep fighting and show perseverance like we have been doing and get the first win of the year."
Andrea Radrizzani poured ‘scorn’ on the report in the Daily Snail that if Leeds are unsuccessful in their bid for promotion this season he will be forced to sell the club. The report suggested that problems financially outside the club will force him to sell some or all the club. It also questioned whether Marcelo Bielsa will continue as Head Coach. The owner Tweeted this in response to the claim by a Snail journalist Craig Hope:
“@DailyMailUK @CraigHope_DM rather then write a lot of nonsense, next time please come for a cup of tea and I am happy to disclosure my projects insiders so you can stop make non sense assumption just to attack and unstable our club. I don’t know and don’t care about your goals.”
"And who is the ones who are behind but seriously we don’t have time and energies for your mind games. We have more important daily biz to care in @ElevenSports (profitable and successful in most to the markets in 3.5 years!) and @LUFC . Good luck to sell few more papers.”
"You don’t really get it ...what doesn’t kill us make us stronger..Nothing will take us aways from our goals and kill our ambition."
Well said Andrea!!
BREXIT... Brendan Rodgers leaves Celtic to become Leicester City manager. The Premier League ex Champions had sacked Claude Puel after last Saturday’s 4-1 home defeat by Crystal Palace. Rodgers signed a three year deal.
QPR v Leeds
Team News: Leeds unchanged. Gaetano Berardi and Barry Douglas return from injury and start on the substitutes bench alongside Brown, Dallas, Peacock-Farrell, Shackleton and Gotts.
Two changes for QPR.
Team: Casilla, Ayling, Jansson, Cooper(c), Alioski, Phillips, Klich, Hernandez, Roberts, Harrison, Bamford.
Thanks to Leeds United web.
Marcelo Bielsa when asked if Leeds were ‘struggling’: "If you watch the game you can see that this team has much energy. What our team has shown in every game is that we have an excess of energy.”
"It's clear that you don't know what you are talking about, because if there is something this team doesn't lack it is energy. If you look at the figures you can see that if there is a problem that this team has, it is not a lack of energy. It's not an opinion, you just have to look at the figures to draw your own conclusions."
“We didn't take advantage of the first half, in our best moment we had Liam Cooper off so we couldn't dominate as we had been doing. In the first five minutes they (QPR) had five good minutes with energy and it was the same situation at the beginning of the second half. They scored the goal and from that moment on the game changed. It was not as natural as it was before.”
Asked how frustrated he was, Bielsa said: “The response is included in the question. I can’t say anything else. You know that this result is frustrating. We can’t hide the points we lost
SteveMcClaren: “(Freeman)showed his real quality and infectious enthusiasm that he gives to the team. When you're looking for leadership and looking for people to have courage and take the ball, he's got all that. He was our talisman tonight. There were a lot of heroic performances but his was incredible.”
"He's someone who can play at the top of the Championship, could play in that Leeds team and could play in the Premier League, so we're delighted to have him here."
Neil Lennon replaces Brendan Rodgers as Celtic manager and will be their interim manager until the end of the season, this will be his third time at Park Head. He was also a player at Celtic where he made over 300 appearances for the club.
Leeds United and Bolton have been charged by the FA following a brawl during Saturday's Championship fixture at Elland Road. Bolton manager Phil Parkinson has also been charged with misconduct.
Both clubs have until 6pm on Friday to respond.
David Watkins on the small margins in winning and loosing a game.
Thank you David. Superb read.
