Marcelo Bielsa, Pablo Hernandez and Josh Warrington are to be joined by rising stars such as Ciara Schlosshan and Hope Price following the unveiling of finalists for the record-breaking 2019 Leeds Sports Awards, set to be held at First Direct Arena on Thursday, February 28th.
The event will again be hosted by BBC Sport reporter Tanya Arnold with this year’s awards having attracted a record 2,266 votes. The finalists for the Senior Achievers Awards had already been announced with Leeds United’s stellar first half of the new Championship campaign seeing the Whites listed for two awards.
World renowned Argentinian chief Bielsa is nominated for the coach of the year award alongside Leeds gymnastics supremo Dave Murray, Hunslet Club Parkside rugby league coach Paul McShane and Leeds Rhinos rugby league ace Adam Cuthbertson. The 21-year-old spent the first half of the season on loan with fellow League One outfit Blackpool, making 17 appearances in all competitions for the Bloomfield Road side.
O’Connor, who has made four first team appearances for Leeds, will now link up with former Leeds midfielder David Hopkin who is in charge at Valley Parade and look to help get Bradford out of the relegation zone.
Pontus Jansson and Pablo Hernandez nominated for PFA Player of the Month.
Leeds Council’s Judith Blake may have the ‘gift’ of seeing into the future after tweeting out “congratulations to @LeedsUnited on their fantastic promotion to the premier league”. Tom Riordan the CEO of Leeds Council said later “It’s a honest mistake but let’s hope it comes true”. I wonder if the same lady has the results of Saturdays lottery number’s so I can gift the club a few quid to boost the transfer kity.
Lewis Baker leaves Leeds to rejoin his parent club Chelsea. He made two starts for the club in the 1-0 wins over Reading and Bolton but was replaced at half time in both games. In all he played fourteen times for club, mainly as a substitute. He is expected to move to another Championship club in this transfer window, Reading the most likely. If he does it will be the sixth move in his Chelsea career.
We wish him the best in the future, but hope he realises he might need to up his work-rate if his next move is to be a success. Later in the day it was confirmed that Baker had joined Reading on loan until the end of the season.
Luton Town’s manager Nathan Jones takes over struggling Stoke City.
Adam Forshaw on Derby: “They have got quality and their manager has come in and injected a bit of intensity. They’ve got really good flair players and there’s an excitement there, like there is at our place. It’s set up to be a really good game again.”
Marcelo Bielsa: Injury situation; Cooper may play, Berardi, Bamford, Brown still out. Douglas out for at least three weeks, Hernandez(thigh)is a major doubt and if he is absent Tyler Robert will play in the ‘number ten’ role. All the ‘rested’ players, apart from Hernandez are fine. Jansson and Roofe had ‘knocks’ but are fine, Klich just needed a rest.
On Lewis Baker: “He was always inside the group, even if it’s true that he hasn't played a lot. Maybe he felt that we didn't value him at the right level but the only time I talked to him about this subject, not only did I tell him I wanted him to stay with us, I told him that we wanted him to stay for next year.
“He’s obviously taken another decision and he had legitimate expectations but in his last game in the FA Cup he had a good performance and this was the starting point for his development in the team.”
No news on incoming transfers. Bielsa hasn’t given Orta a list and said that “He proposes players to me and I give him my opinion’. Ten players could be absent from the eighteen that face Derby County but he reiterated that the club will only bring in better players that it already has. He hopes that most of the players missing will be back in the next few weeks, including ‘Izzy’ Brown who has yet to start for the first team.
On Derby: “They are not the same team anymore, they are a lot better now as a team. I don’t think it will be the same game (as the 4-1 win). But what I think is that we have the conditions to try and win against them, we cannot rely on the fact we played against them five months ago. I don’t think they will be similar games, both teams are very different.”
Ex Leeds 80’s midfielder John(Shez)Sheridan has been confirmed as the new manager of National League side Chesterfield, after resigning from Carlisle at the weekend. He won 15 of his 32 games at Brunton Park before moving south, where he will be assisted by Glynn Snodin.

Derby County Football Club can confirm that officers from the Derbyshire Constabulary were called to the Derby County Training Centre at around 11:20am on Thursday 10th January 2019 following reports of a man acting suspiciously outside the premises.
Keeping an eye on ‘The Rams’
It has since been confirmed to Derby County that the individual concerned is an employee of the footballing staff at Leeds United Football Club. The club is now in discussion with Leeds United club officials in relation to this incident.
At this time no further comment will be made.
The FA commented later that they will investigate the matter.

Ryan Ingham’s match report of the superb win over Derby.
Man of the Match: Adam Forshaw, superb in midfield. Just beat Jack Clarke for my vote, but all in white deserved praise for the victory.
Kemar🔥Roofe celebrates number one. Jack Harrison scores and celebrates the second.
Marcelo Bielsa: "If we take into account the quality of the opponent and the fact that we lost the last two Championship games, it's a very significant win. We had to defend very well and this made it easier.”
Marcelo Bielsa takes responsibility for Leeds United 'spygate' saga but refuses to apologise.
Thanks to the YEP.
Frank Lampard: "The best team one without a doubt. They were better than us from the first minute to the last. Definitely below the standards we set in terms of energy but mainly on the ball we didn't have the courage to play against the team that work hard to stop you playing. But you have to keep playing and that's why I can't accept.
"Whether it(the 'spying')is a league issue or an FA issue [I don't know] they have to deal with it, but it's up to them. I feel wrong to talk about it in this moment because it would seem like I'm making an excuse; the performance deserves no excuses."
Leeds United statement: “Following comments made by Marcelo Bielsa yesterday the club will look to work with our head coach and his staff to remind them of the integrity and honesty which are the foundations that Leeds United is built on.”
“Our owner Andrea Radrizzani has met with Derby County’s owner Mel Morris to formally apologise for Marcelo’s actions. We will make no further comment on this matter.”
A view from the opposition. Andy Buckley-Taylor(@BuckTaylor64) who did the ‘interview’ pre game gives his thoughts on Leeds’ 2-0 win over Derby County.
Ok I think tonight Leeds showed great organisation and game management. We were never in the game and never threatened. Your goalkeeper won't get many easier games than this one. Your blip appears to have been a short one and you look set up to make a real push for automatic promotion. Young Clarke impressed me very much. I noticed that you had a few home grown players that look very good.
I think the score flattered us to be honest, only Duane Holmes would have got an acceptable rating from me. You had two possible calls for a penalty, one was definite! I do think that your keeper though was lucky not to see red when he caught Holmes with his foot in the face, but hey referees can't see anything and his back was turned.
If you bring in just a couple of signings in January, I think you'll cement a top two place. There's no other team in the division that looks as good as that! Norwich showed weaknesses against us and Aston Villa aren't yet making the improvement that I thought they would. For us I think we have to just move on and replicate our first half of the season. Frank Lampard has worked miracles with no money. There may be a couple of loans coming in, but the summer should help release some funds when the players in the ‘bomb squad’(players who rarely start games) are out of contract.
Leeds are what one might call a sleeping giant. Once one of the biggest teams in the country, their fans have suffered for a long time. With good management and good business in the transfer window if they go up, they could possibly again realise their dream and become a top 6 premier league team.”
Thank you Andy.
David Watkins on a pretty good night in Leeds 11
Thank you David.
Kiko Casilla is heavily rumoured to be the goalkeeper that Leeds will sign in the coming week. The 32 year old stopper is Real Madrid’s third choice goalkeeper and played against Spurs in the Champions League recently, he has been capped once for the Spanish National team.

Heidi Haigh on ‘spy gate’, her own spying on the great Leeds team, free scarfs and the thumping of Derby County
Thank you Heidi.
Nothing like a good win on a Friday night to put you in a good mood for the weekend, even if your working! I can’t remember a better performance in a long while, the last that stuck in my memory was another win over Derby a few years ago when Chris Wood scored the only goal in another one sided game.
The ‘spy gate’ shenanigans but a little dampener on the win, just because the stupidity of the over reaction of the likes of Jermaine Jenas and ex rugby league player Leon Pryce saying that Leeds should be ‘docked’ points over the discretion.
It was silly but not a malicious action by the Head Coach, a fine should suffice but the Head Coach must learn that what he did previously he can’t do in England.
It is with great sadness that the club announced the passing of former striker Phil Masinga at the age of 52.
Phil Masinga signed for Leeds from mamelodi sundowns in the Summer of 1994, made his debut at West Ham on 20/8/94, he made 39 appearances for Lufc scoring 11 goals between 1994-1996. RIP 💙⚽️
The forward was adored in his country for scoring the goal that clinched them their first World Cup appearance in 1998.
The saddest news I’ve ever had to use in my diary.
Rest in Peace Toby, you will always be in our hearts. Sleep well, God Bless. Our sympathies to his friends and his family.
A message from Andrea after the sad passing of Toby.
With this news, and the news of a former player passing away we would like to dedicate this Diary to the families of both Phil and Toby, who will remain in our thoughts and hearts.
