Love was in the air at Elland Road. The travelling Valentine's Fair was resplendent on Fullerton Park car park preparing for the evening rush of young fun seekers looking to entertain their loved ones with a dodgy burger and a ride on the waltzers. Yes romance was alive and well in LS11 and by some strange quirk of the Football League fixture computer this was also the day that Leeds United welcomed one of their most unloved rivals, Millwall, to Elland Road for a hugely significant game in the unseemly battle at the wrong end of the championship. Leeds Ladies finally returned to league action for the first time since mid-December as they hosted Sheffield United at Manse Lane. Although we had our doubts about the match when the game was delayed due to the referee going to the wrong ground, this led to chants of “Get the ref a satnav” when the teams finally came out at 2:30. With Sheff Utd propping up the table having only picked up a solitary point this season it was clear to see their game plan was damage limitation. The Blades spent much of the first 30 minutes with a very deep back line looking to sit back & try hit Leeds on the counter attack. This frustrated The Phoenix as they were resigned to shots from distance & half chances. Leeds frustration was compounded when after just 13 mins Carey “Kez” Huegett was forced off with a hamstring injury & was replaced by Shelbey Morris. By Keith Ingham
After leaving 'church' at the end of a frustrating game when Leeds United fell to their first Championship defeat of 2015 most or nearly all conversations were around the handling of the game by Graham Salisbury. "We don't arf get them" was one urinal philosopher comment and a few more with a lot more expletives in. By Andrew Butterwick
There was a strange feeling in the car as the Happy Chocker, Quiet One and yours truly headed for the Theatre of Hope and the clash with Mark Warbuton's high flying Brentford team. It was something called confidence despite being en route to watch Leeds United there was a positive buzz in the car on the prospect of extending our 4 match unbeaten run against the Bees from West London. Although Brentford were mightily impressive when they battered us 2.0 earlier in the season and they possess a pacey front line with plenty of width Leeds are suddenly a much more resilient and confident team due to a surprisingly successful January..............all the more surprising if you think back to the woeful display at Derby in Leeds' last match of 2014. Just to add to the surreal atmosphere we had just survived the January transfer window without selling any of our best players and Luke Murphy had been nominated for Championship player of the month! Carlsberg don't do epic Januarys but if they did................. By Mark Rasdall
King Alfred lived for fifty years, twenty eight of them as King of Wessex. He saw off the Vikings who came to conquer our island and was famous for his financial and military expertise. He was much loved and admired and, following his death in 899, became known as Alfred the Great. No other English King has been revered in the same way. By Andrew Butterwick
The weather was wet, cold and decidedly uninviting as the Happy Chocker, Quiet One and yours truly arrived at Selby station for the journey to Huddersfield and our high noon clash with Town. As ever the off the field tribulations of the mighty whites had dominated the news this week but today was all about the Football and the small matter of completing the double over our dog loving cousins from down the A62. After an amusing last leg of the journey from Dewsbury including some good natured banter with the Town fans we were passing Harold Wilson's statue and heading for the ground. Redders team news confirmed new signing Bamba as a replacement for the suspended Bellusci in an otherwise unchanged starting eleven. |
