Albion fan David Piddock talks of his support for ‘The Baggies’ and the game with Leeds on New Year’s Day.
How long have you followed West Bromwich Albion and why did you choose them as your team?
Since I was 6. My brother was an Albion fan and my dad a Wolves fan! So up until then I was pretty split. I won tickets through school to watch Albion and remember sitting in the old rainbow stand (now east stand) thinking these are my team. Don Goodman scored a Beckhamesque free kick to win the match and I was hooked. (My dad hasn’t forgiven me!!)
What’s your favourite moment as a fan? Season, game or anything other occasion or mention any other football related event you’ve witnessed
Two games spring immediately to mind. Playoff semifinal 1993 v Swansea. Second leg. Stood in the brummie (Birmingham road end)
First promotion to premier league in 2002. watching Superbob and Big Dave send us to the promised land. Even sweeter that we condemned Wolves to the play offs after they held a 10 point lead over us earlier in the season.
Tell us about a player that you were proud to have on the back of a shirt, if you didn’t is there one you wished you would have?
Never had a player on my shirt always been my name or Daddy. Would’ve been proud to wear Astle, Regis or Taylor.
What’s your most memorable match playing against Leeds United and your thoughts on the battle for the automatic promotion places. Would you rather go up as Champions or Runners Up
The one that comes to mind is a 3-1 hammering we took in our first home game in the premier league. We’d put up a decent performance the week before against Man Utd. We played a lot of the game with 10 men so we’re thinking we could get some joy out of Leeds. Not to be. We were played off the park. I remember lee Marshall getting a late consolation for our first ever premier league goal. I remember thinking this will be a long long season!!
As I work in Leeds I have a lot of Whites friends. I’d be happy for us both to go up in any order. I think we both have the best squads in the division and over the course of the season we will both manage to get over the line this time.
Are you happy with your dealings in this summer transfer windows so far? Is there any player you’d love to bring into your starting eleven? (Messi and Ronaldo cannot be considered!) and who you think is the best signing a Championship club have made.
Very happy with summer signings and hopefully a few additions next month. For me I think us signing Pereira has been the signing of the season. In terms of dream buy we desperately need an out and our goal scorer. Kanu and Austin do a job but we need someone to keep us ticking. Ollie Watkins please!!
What’s your hopes for this season? Do you think it a season that you will build for next season
Only option now is automatic promotion. Anything else from the position were in would be a failure in my eyes.
Who are your three for the drop?
Who are the teams you consider will be in the top six of the Championship in May?
Please name you top six in any order.
Based on what I’ve seen:
Who’s your danger man?
Can you tell us about a rising star in the youth ranks?
Nathan Ferguson. right back / left back. Has a great future if he gets his head down. Talk of him moving to Juventus / Spurs / Rangers. Hope he sees sense and realises his immediate future is at the hawthorns.
Prediction and scorers for the game?
You know what 3 weeks ago I’d have said 3-1 to Albion. Right now I’m a bit worried. We’re in a little bit of bad form. If sawyers is working on all cylinders I think we’ll sneak it. Both teams can score and concede. Don’t think I could take a 5-4 though!!
A big Thank you to David and let’s hope it’s a game we all remember.
