Ahead of today’s clash with Luton, we had the chance to speak with a Leeds United fan who knows a fair bit about the Hatters.
How long have you supported Leeds?
I’ve followed Leeds United since the early 70’s with my first memory being the 1972 Cup Final and Sniffer’s diving header. Watched it at a neighbours house who had a colour TV !!
What is your favourite game as a Leeds fan?
I can honestly say there isn’t a best game that sticks out in my memory, but loads that for different reasons I remember more. And funnily enough it’s the losses and the heartaches that keep me in love with this incredible Club.
Charlton at home in the Play Offs and levelling the tie, Champions League semi final at home, Doncaster in the Play Off Final, Villa in the League Cup Final... being in numerous Away sections over the years when we’ve been beaten being so close to going up and that FA Cup semi final at Hillsborough.
A bit left field here - but my first visit to Elland Road which was not until the mid 80’s when we were Div 2. About 15,000 with a team including Blake and Hilaire. We beat Palace and the drug of travelling to LUFC HQ just got stronger.
What is your favourite era as a Leeds fan?
As a kid growing up in the 70’s and with only Match of the Day or the Big Match showing football, I couldn’t wait to see if Leeds were on. Magic football which I’d reenact all we
Who have been some of your favourite players?
Sniffer when I was a kid, Vinnie and Strachs, Batts and Speed. But just for being Mr LUFC over all the years and his total commitment to the Club it’s got to be Eddie Gray
Who are your favourite managers to stand in the LS11 dugout?
1. Revie 2. Wilko 3. Bielsa - no need to explain, winners are winners.
What are your thoughts on the Game with Luton?
‘Boxing’ above their weight for sure. Great work ethic, great spirit but struggling at the moment. Tricky at Kenilworth Road if you get them on one of their good days. Crowd is small but noisy, close to the pitch and has been their strength for the last two seasons. Get them on a day when they’re not firing and their faithful get on their backs and they’re vulnerable all over the pitch. On a bad run currently and it seems their new Gaffer doesn’t really know his best system.
All seems a bit knee jerk with shuffling players about into different positions, pressure from the fans with the new goalkeeper being benched, sometimes playing a back 3, then a back 4, sticking with pretty ball playing from the back even when under pressure, focusing on central midfield when being somewhat lightweight if chosen players in that position get snuffed out early doors.
Isaiah Brown seems to be the chosen one and currently who the team is based around. On his day he will unlock opposition defences, create chances and generally be a total nuisance. Mpanzu is a real talent too as is Shinnie, but they won’t put all 3 in the side at once. Collins up front is a handful and works harder than any Luton player on the field. Loves scoring and will feed off scraps. Young Harry
Who is Luton’s best player?
Cornick is a fans favourite and has improved immensely - quick too. But..... it all depends on who their Gaffer selects on the day. I think he’l pick a defensive formation and try to soak up everything before relying on our own greed of possession football, patient to wait for a small crack to counter attack.
‘Izzy’ Brown... Your thoughts on the ex Leeds loanee?
If he’s fit (been out recently) he’l want to get one over on Mr B our Leader. It didn’t click for him with us. He likes to be the star man, we know Bielsa wants warriors and workers.
‘Izzy’ is totally gifted and that’s his strength. Get into him early doors and he’l be Invisible. Just hope Kalvin seeks him out early and wins that battle.
Prediction for the match?
Could be a rout but I’d rather be sensible. 1-3 Leeds.
We’d like to thank our secret fan for a fantastic interview and hope he enjoys a win!
