Are the Leeds board finally starting to realise what all us fans have been saying for the last few years, when it comes to players contracts?
For too long players with lots of potential have not been offered contracts until the last moment and ended up leaving us for nothing or as good as. But at last.... Some forward thinking.... First Tom Lees, our brightest young defender to come out of the youth system for a long time has signed up until 2015, followed shortly by the news that Ramon Nunez has also been tied down until 2015 and Zac Thompson unitl 2013. This has to be great news for us after seeing so many prospects disappear in recent times. Lees has the potential to be an extremely good centre back and has even been compared to the likes of Jonathan Woodgate in recent times, whereas Nunez has alot of quality and with some more work could be world class and a return of 5 goals in 10 appearances so far this season isn't a bad way to start. The only exception at the moment is our captain Jonny Howson, who's current deal expires in the summer and negotiations are dragging on a bit, hopefully this will be sorted in the near future as the last thing the team needs is their captains future being in doubt. Especially with rumoured interest from Premiership clubs. To be fair though, if it turns out he doesn't want to commit his future to the club, then he needs to be stripped of the captaincy and it should be given to someone who does. The same now must be done throughout the team, the likes of Clayton, McCormack and Snodgrass need to be tied down early on so we can build on what we have as a team and get us back to where we belong.... Well it has to be said, the last game against Portsmouth was a BIG improvement on recent games. Not only the 3 points and clean sheet, but the way the team played together.... as a team. First off playing Lees in his actual position made a massive difference and makes you wonder why it wasn't done sooner. The whole back four looked very solid, and Connolly and White supported when going forward very well; Lonergan once again had a good game and has to be our most consistant performer so far this season along with Clayton.
It was great to see Snodgrass put himself about again and do what he does best, he clearly also benefitted from Connolly's support at the back. Pugh looked good, and seems a very good addition to the team. Clayton worked hard and looked class as always and McCormack put in another good shift. For me our only two concerns at the moment are Howson and Keogh. Howson at the moment just doesn't seem on his game, the last four or five in particular he has gone missing for large periods and hasn't had much effect... Not the Howson we are used to seeing. It may be time to rest/drop him for a while and give Vayrynen a chance, who looked sharp again when he came on. Also Keogh..... He's doing Ok, I guess... But once again didn't do much in the game except misplace passes and miss sitters. It must surely be time to start with Becchio, who is a different class and given a chance could link up well with McCormack. Overall though, we looked like a much better team and need to stick with that back four for a while, even if they make the odd mistake. We will never have a good defence if we change it every game, and at the moment the lads who played the last game are the best we have. A good blend of youth and experience. A few more performances like this.... and who knows.... MOT! Welcome to my new blog! I'm really looking forward to getting started on this page. I will be posting regularly my views on Leeds matches, news, basically anything to do with our team.
